    Our New Home

    By Corvus | May 20, 2005

We’re now being hosted by Powweb. I have more space (5 GB!), more bandwidth (10gigs… a day), more sub domains (as in, unlimited, easy to set up, sub-domains), more databases (5 MySQL), more e-mail accounts (650), greylisting, blacklisting/whitelisting, secure SMTP(!), full .htaccess control, a great support forum with a very helpful community… it’s a little overwhelming. It’s not expensive either. Just $7.77 a month, and if you sign up for a year (paid in advance), you get an extra six months free. I even managed to save a little money thanks to WordPress. I’ve read goods things about them all over the web and it certainly seems much faster than the last place.

Yesterday I had a great breakthrough in my character design system (is it considered tacky to link back to your own articles?). Now I just have to figure out the best way to implement it. I’m starting to get all buzzy-headed and excited again. I like this feeling!

I feel very cramped in my office at the moment. Not only has the surface of my desk become some odd experiment in organizational chaotic stacking theory, but I’m also using a small 15″ monitor that’s attached to a skeleton that I keep in the closet. The fans on that thing, buffered only by the molecules of air that flow through them (or, you know, unbuffered as would be the short way of saying it), lend the room a rather industrial feel. It’s almost as if I’m in some 21st century Dickensian world. All right, it’s nothing like that, but I just wanted to say Dickensian (Ooo! He said it again!). Anyhoo, I’ll hopefully get my real machine back sometime early next week.

My wife and I have been watching Carnivale on DVD lately and it just became interesting with episode 8. Up until now I’ve found it to be an interesting concept with mediocre directing, acting, and writing. The writing didn’t get a lot better in episode 8, but the show suddenly came alive. I’m guessing the direction of Scott Winant had something to do with that. Speaking of carnivals, Button Mashing is holding a Carnival of Gamers! If you write a gaming Blog, head over and check out his plans.

Well, I’m off to get my main site set up on the new servers now. I’ll post something more… industrial later today.

    Da Gloomy Moon

P.S. I just got off the phone with Network Solutions about the problems I had with their service. The supervisor I spoke with, Joanne, was very attentive and took notes while I summarized my issues. She then proceeed, although not legally obligated, to refund all but one month of service, and the domain registration to my account. She apologized, thanked me for my feedback, and assured me that my concerns would be passed along to the appropriate people. She was very gracious and I greatly appreciate the service I got today. Thanks Joanne!

That’s not a skeleton, that’s a dismembered body! Actually, if you think of how a PC is really constructed, the case is more of an exoskeleton and your picture is of the inside. Hmmm…I hadn’t previously thought of my PC as an insect… I guess you’re “skeleton” has molted? ;-)

Oh, and great news about getting the refund. I’m very happy you got that back. Not that it makes up for the time you wasted dealing with the issues, but it does take a bit of the sting out of it.

“I hadn’t previously thought of my PC as an insect”

PC as insect… shades of Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch. A movie which, incidently, has withstood the test of time quite nicely. The Peter Weller sure seems under-appreciated in Hollywood. He’s quite the actor.
