    Running Rapidly ‘Round the Revolution

    By Corvus | September 16, 2005

So you say you want a revolution? You’ve read the transcript, watched the promo vid, and read all of the blog posts*, yes? My first thought was of the next Zelda title. Yum. It looks like Nintendo will be getting my money first among the next gen consoles.

The September Round Table had several new entries yesterday. Unfettered blather, Button Mashing, Mile Zero, and Design Synthesis all took their places at the table with more interesting perspectives on genre melding. Be sure to check them out, they range from the prognostic to the damned amusing.

I’d like to explain something about retail. You cannot expect a store to meet competitors’ advertised pricing and have every register open at all times and eager, knowledgeable sales floor staff on every isle. You cannot expect to call a store that is driven by the current Wal Mart model of retail success (however reluctantly) and have one of the four of five employees on duty shop for your daughter’s bicycle for you. As I see it, you have some choices. You either shop at a local boutique store and pay higher prices for excellent service, or you go to a national chain outlet, do the leg work and research yourself and pay less. Most of the employees at these stores are doing their very best with limited resources. The situation makes them cranky too, so try not to punish them for not being able to treat you like their only customer all the time.

That being said, if any one wants to pay me to be a full time student for a couple of years, let me know. I’ll happily perform other duties at the same time. As long as they’re legal duties, that is.

Here’s the second step of the sketch vectorization process:

    Multipass explosion

That’s the last three eight-pass scans, ungrouped and spread out. The next step consists of finding three or four of those individual layers that work well together to create a clean-yet-complete version of the original sketch.

Chris asked me yesterday what the point of creating vector version of pencil sketches was. My answer is twofold. first off, it’s just a fun style exercise. Some of them turn out quite nicely, some not so much. Eventually, I’ll figure out which sketch styles work best and create some t-shirt logos and what not. Secondly, it’s handy to have the process available as vector images can be infinitely stretched without loosing clarity. In the case of the MBB logo, I needed a much larger image than I had available to me (the original sketch being modified out of existance ruled out a re-scan) in order to place it on mugs and t-shirts over at Cafe Press.

Brinstar commented on the creature depicted. It’s a Gree’shom Spear. The Gree’shom are a desert dwelling reptilian race. A Spear is an elite warrior mage, capable of incredible speed and agility in battle.

Well, it’s Friday and I’ve got an idea or two for posts floating around in my head. We’ll see if they fall out before I head to work this evening. I kow I’ve suggested some upcoming topics over the last few weeks and I think I’ve missed one or two of them. If you were perticularly waiting for me to talk about something, let me know, and I’ll see what I can do…

    * I was planning on linking to multiple posts, but the time it would take to filter them all and determine which ones I wanted to link to is a bit intimidating. I’ll leave it up to you to visit your favorite blog, which will no doubt have something to say on the topic.

Ah, of course – stretching. As soon as the word ‘stretch’ came up, the whole vector thing made sense to me. :)
