    Here it is Thursday*

    You’ve got until the very end of the day to post those Round Table entries! Hollywood and games, what’s not to talk about? I’ll be getting home late tonight and I’ll add new posts then. If I miss any, I’ll catch them in the morning, bright and early.

    Once we have surrendered our senses and nervous systems to the private manipulation of those who would try to benefit from taking a lease on our eyes and ears and nerves, we don’t really have any rights left.

    That, of course, is Marshall McLuhan. I’m running up against the edge of library renewals on Understanding Media and I’m not terribly far into it. Reading it is rather like ritualistically pummeling yourself with a five pound sledge. I take one good hit and spend some time reeling, integrating the new metaphor into the rest of my perceptions, and wind up for another good smash at the bridge of my nose. Surprisingly, it’s fun.

    Plans for moving progress swiftly. Plans for starting a creative career progress. The arrival of Spring should see the arrival of a performance art/storytelling/puppet/art satire street performer, at the very least. At most, art fairs and Renaissance festivals will see the appearance of a mixed media storytelling enabler some time over the next year. We’ll see exactly how quickly I can put things together.

    Even I am finding my music mix to be on the edge of too eclectic this morning. While writing this post, I’ve listened to the Ramones, Sinaed Lohan, Burl Ives, Free Hot Lunch, Paul Simon, Social Distortion, Gorillaz, the Jayhawks, and the Dickies. Perhaps that explains why I struggle to keep a consistent mood going throughout my posts. I ought to create playlists for my NaNoWriMo time next month. Either that, or resign myself to writing without listening to music, which would probably be the smarter choice, eh?

    I finally gave in and poked at America’s Army yesterday. I read a couple of references (now lost in the tangled web of RSS feeds) to a kid saving his brother’s life thanks to medical training received in the game and I had to see it for myself. The fact that in order to pass training you have to submit your progress to the server creeped me out a bit. Some of the training lessons suffered from too much expository presentation of data. “Show, don’t tell,” is one of those Hollywood lessons we ought to be listening to as game designers. I spent more time checking out the soldier obsessively spinning his pencil behind me in the airway class than I did paying attention the first responder training taking place in the virtual classroom. I wasn’t the only one. One of the soldier NPCs kept looking at the clock too. I may go on to play some actual missions, or I might just play some more Opposing Forces.

    I’m reviewing and tweaking Wordpress themes for a writer friend of mine. It’s making me twitchy to change up MBB a bit. We’ll see how time goes. Starting next month, I may find myself with a lot of time for creative projects again. I’m also wanting to install SUSE 10, the newly released OSS version of my preferred OS. I’ll have to put a machine back together to test it on first. I don’t feel like triple booting my laptop until it’s a *nix/OSX/XP(or Vista, I suppose) system. I’m also not going to upgrade without some idea of that the end result is going to look like.

    Erg. Look at the time. If I’m going to get another myth post up this morning, I need to start cracking on it. Don’t forget, Round Table! Submit to it, you know you want to!
