    Slight STOB Delay

    By Corvus | April 21, 2006

I had intended to announce the Monday launch of the Spring Tournament of Bloggers today, sort of an opening ceremonies, if you will. As it stands, we’ll have to wait until Monday. So, you’ve got the weekend to warm up those Metroid Prime Hunters skillz! If you’re interested in joining, it’d be nice if you let me know this weekend if possible (just leave a comment on this thread). If you’re not sure you want to participate until you’ve seen the prizes and read the full rules, things are structured so you’ll be able to jump into the fray at any point through Thursday and still play a full complement.

I can tell you that with our current roster it might take a couple of weeks to finish off the tournament, as we’re allowing players to cooperate in scheduling their own matches (some of us aren’t available every evening). Instead of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, we’re going to have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tier Champions. That’ll make more sense once I figure out how to explain the ladder succinctly.

I’ll ask that everyone use one of the three initial bounty hunters and after I play through all the arenas, there may be arena assignments for your match as well (more difficult arenas being place in higher tiers). Once it’s over, we’ll have a massive free for all game to celebrate!

At the moment, the participants include:

If I’ve forgotten anyone who’s already signed up, please give me a kick and forgive me. It’s easily rectified. I’ll see you on Monday for the official launch of the Spring Tournament of Bloggers!

      Sounds great. Shame that:

      a) Metroid Prime Hunters is not to the best of my knowledge released yet in Australia (although I do have my shiny “early adopter” demo disc).
      b) I have not the slightest clue how to make my DS go all internetty. I suspect it would require me to work out where the hell the Nintendo hotspots are in Australia, or do something complicated to my computer that involves a router. Any direction on this topic would be appreciated.

What do you mean, three initial hunters? Which three are those?

Also, is this just going to be Battle mode, or are you going to open up the other game types?

“Initial three” is misleading, C, because you can also unlock them during wifi mode. I’ve got all but one unlocked and I’m only really starting the SP mode. So “initial three” = first three you happen to beat.

Honestly, the balance is done very well. I wouldn’t pay too much concern as to who has unlocked whom.

My vote is Battle mode. I love the other modes, but if people aren’t used to ‘em, they get owned quickly.

GregT – Get a wifi router for your net connection. They’re relatively easy to setup. Once your net connection has wifi, it’s a piece of cake. Otherwise, try Nintendo’s wifi dongle for your computer. I haven’t known anyone who has tried it yet, but it’s been well reviewed.

OMG. I’m going to die. I need to practice! I played one match last night and I was swearing in frustration because I kept getting killed. :-(

I’m not playing SP mode at all.

P.S. — I think the stylus is working for me. Feels like I have more control. :-)

People have actually been able to set the DS up running as a peer with an Ad-hoc network, also. The DS doesn’t seem to care if you’re in infrastructure or not. I used to tunnel my PocketPC this way: share the wifi card in a laptop with its 100baseT connection and it’s basically a free connection point. Windows will do it for you, basically, and I’m sure other OS’s will as well.

I think the hunters are pretty balanced. I wouldn’t worry about getting them unlocked. But either way I’m fine–I prefer either Noxus or Spire, and I think they’re both in the initial three.

OK, this is going to sound weird: Is the DS Lite matte plastic or glossy plastic?

I can’t stand handheld devices that collect fingerprints.

Brin – work with the bots at first (go to multicard play, add bots from there). The players on NWF have such a wide range of skills that it’s easy to get into match where one or two players dominate the rest. Sometimes that’s good. I kept playing in a group because I was ending up on the lowest rung, but I could at least manage a few kills and was hopefully getting practice.

But some one star bots help you learn the maps and some of the other basics. Map control is huge in Hunters. Not as bad as it is in like Quake, because there aren’t superweapons to protect … but keeping an eye on the health orbs is vital.

Darth Pixel: The DS Lite is glossy on the outside, matte on the inside. It definitely picks up fingerprints.

Josh: Oh, I didn’t know you could do that! Thanks!

Darth: I’ve got the Enamel Navy model. It’s very glossy. The fingerprints show up from the right angle, but from more than a few feet away it just looks shiny. It might be less obvious on the white or light blue models.

I wager ten buckazoids on Corvus. He’d never promote this so eagerly unless he was hustling.

Troy: Yes, but what exactly am I hustling?

Everyone: All right, since we seem to have a consensus, any and all bounty hunters are fair game. More details on Monday. I’m glad to see everyone seems excited!
