Why We Do This…
By Corvus | December 21, 2006
Juuso, of Game Producer, poses an interesting end-of-the-year question:
As the year is coming to end I think it’s good idea to remind yourself about why you are making games.

What’s your reason for doing games?

As a storyteller with a passion for the English language, people often ask me why I don’t write novels. With almost twenty years experience guiding people through my world(s), I certainly have plenty of stories to tell.
My primary issue is this: I do not want my stories to become static. Once the word exists on the published page, that’s it. That’s the form the narrative has taken and it doesn’t not change (except in the perceptions of the audience, of course).
Games, on the other hand, particularly on-going, evolving, participatory narratives like I’m designing the Honeycomb Engine to produce, are in a constant state of flux. When designed properly, no two play-throughs are exactly alike. It’s an opportunity to publish, yet maintain dynamism.
And that is why I design games.

I do games because games are important. We play to learn, to think, to grow. I am an educator, a philosopher, an engineer when I work at games. I produce objects others can build on to further the art. I push the quality of living higher for individuals I influence through my games. I provide alternatives, choices, avenues, and communities to the players that play my games. Games are opportunities for players to grow.
That’s why I do games.

Much the reasons I feel the need to tell stories in the first place!
