May ‘07 Round Table – Updated 5/29/07
By Corvus | May 29, 2007
Our first Round Table post of the month has been submitted. Marcus, blogger and Chief Creative Officer of Verse Studios has posted a overview of the topic simply titled, Goals in Games (link).
Be sure to swing by and welcome Marcus to the table and use his post as a launching point for your own thoughts on the role of goals in games.
One of our Round Table Regulars, Chris Bateman makes his triumphant return this month, meaning he’s settled into his new home and ready to resume blogging. Good news for us all! Chris’s entry examines goals-oriented and process-oriented players and is a good read that’s sure to inspire more posts (link).
Another new participant joins the table! In his debut, zenBen Land explores the correlations between goal and process, so go read his full entry and welcome him to the table (link).
Marcus, in a comment on zenBen’s post suggests an approach for the next entry, so see if you can beat him to it:
Perhaps there should be a more hard and fast definition of what a goal actually is, and where do user defined goals fit into the spectrum? I have seen players break many a structured system in pursuit of player created goals.
Good stuff this month so far. Let’s keep ‘em coming!
The only thing I like as much as seeing our regular contributors continue their association with the Round Table is having new contributors and May has been a banner month for new this!*
Today sees an inaugural entry from the nameless blogger Tim McDonald at Bastard Numbered. He takes a look at the popularity of relatively goal-less games in Scoring Goals (link).
Mile Zero adds to the table an excellent post on games ad real world goals. Bonus points to Thomas for creative interpretation of the very lose guidelines (link)!
Patrick of King Lud IC joins us with an entry that warns us not to get carried away with our goals… or our lack of them (link).
Chico adds a non-games perspective on the topic of goals, referring back to previous entries in Goals, and Yes I Like Them (link).
We have another new participant! Diogo from Ludonauta submits our first bilingual post. The English version is available now and a Portuguese translation will follow. Be sure to stop by and welcome him and his thoughts on inherent and arbitrary goals (link).
::UPDATE::
zenBen is back with part two of his musings. His ideas have gelled a bit in this one and I think it’ll provide good fodder for continued conversation (link
This post will be regularly updated with new Round Table submissions.
*Yes, I recognize that’s a backhanded way of saying,” Gosh! I shore do lahk havin’ ya’ll submit yore scirbblins!

The BN blogger isn’t nameless – the authorial credit is at the bottom. Tim McDonald (he wrote the narrative guest blog for me a couple of months ago)

heh. That’s what I get for looking at the “About” page! I knew his name, it was in the e-mail. But when I went to see how he might want to be credited, I somehow missed the byline and found this quote instead:
Anyway… the post has been updated and I’m looking forward to yours!

[...] Oops! Looks like I failed to get an entry together in time for the May Round Table. It’s half-written, really it is, but I unfortunately ran into a few unaccountably busy days [...]
