    And the winner is…

    By Corvus | December 3, 2007

I counted 16 hats in the ring for The Witcher giveaway and used two 8 sided die to determine which lucky reader would be getting the game. To remove any suspicion of foul play, I recorded the selection process for you.

In case you don’t feel like watching the video, I printed the list of sixteen names and rolled the eight sided dice. They came up 6 and 4, which equals (obviously) 10.

and the tenth name in the printed list was… bookamp.!

Bookamp, be sure to contact me privately with a mailing address so I can get your game out to you. I hope you enjoy it more than I did!

Thanks for all the buzz (both positive and negative) and don’t go too far, as I’m going to explore how I can make game giveaways a regular feature of Man Bytes Blog.

Makes it kind of hard for No. 1, doesn’t it? Or do I have my math wrong?

Or, given the game, should the No. 1 person feel lucky?

Hm. That’s what I get for dashing through the process before I’ve had a full cup of coffee, eh? Well, I don’t think Travis is going to mind. I’ll buy him a drink at GDC to make up for it.

Any and all future lotteries are going to use a Python script to pick the names anyway, so that won’t be a problem again.

…and open-source Python app, no less, so if I write it as poorly as I thought through the dice roll, you can call me on it too!

There is another problem. When you roll multiple dice the odds tend towards the middle, which is 9 in this case.

So, for example, number 10 was actually 7 times more likely to win than number 2.

Maybe my math’s not up and running yet either this morning, but I count seven ways to roll a “10″ and only one way to roll a “2″, one way to roll a “16″.

Fortunately, I didn’t promise a random number generator with equally weighted distribution.

Okay, I feel stupid. I did this in a rush this morning so I could focus on a project. Fortunately, only fifteen people who had minimal investment were adversely affected and to each of them:

      I apologize.

All I can say is that next time, I’ll do better!

While I was out walking with (T.S.) Eliot, it dawned on my that I have some items at hand that would make excellent consolation prizes.

Give me until the morning and I’ll pick two more people from the remaining 15 to select prizes from the grab bag.

I was left off the list entirely :(

I realize I didn’t specifically say that I wanted the game, but based on the wording of your post, I thought we only had to leave a comment.

This whole process is cursed! Red Bull, had the thread not erupted into… well, what it did… bah, never mind.

It’s a small consolation, but I’ll make sure you’re on the list for the second drawing tomorrow morning.
