BoRT’cast – January 2009
By Corvus | February 2, 2009
Here it is! The inaugural Blogs of the Round Table podcast. This month’s guests are Troy Goodfellow of Flash of Steel, Krystian Majewski of Game Design Scrapbook, and Joe Tortuga of Cult of the Turtle. My thanks goes out to all three of them for their insight into January’s topic and for putting up with the technical issues our conversation suffered. I’d also like to take full responsibility for anything they say that might feel disjointed, as I was forced to edit out quite a bit of brilliance due to incomplete, or incomprehensible, audio.
For quick reference, the three posts we discuss in this podcast are Living Epic’s Oedipus the RPG, Post-Emo-Existentiell Gaming’s Who Killed Fyodor Karamazov? and Show & Tell’s Omelas: A Game. The book I reference at the end of the podcast is The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro. One of these days, I’m going sweep cross the ring of salt, dig it up, unseal my copy from the six-ton concrete tomb I buried it in and read it again. Really. Any day now. Honest.
The three indie games referenced in the podcast are The Majesty of Colors (on Konqregate) by Gregory Weir, Execution by Jesse Venbrux, and Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble from Keith Nemitz of Mousechief.

February’s BoRT’cast is going to take a slightly different approach, but feel free to make suggestions based on this month’s podcast format. I figure after a few months, we’ll have hit upon a strategy that tickles the fancy of us all.

Wonderful podcast Corvus! Can’t wait for more, especially if there are going to be such a quantity of great BoRT entries like there were this month. I’d somehow missed out on the Omelas post and that’s one of my favorite short stories.
And thanks Krystian for discussing my post! As a brand spanking new blogger it’s nice to feel so instantly welcome and, for lack of a better word, validated in this community.
On suggestion Corvus: Can you provide links to the other games discussed in the cast? i.e. Execution and The Wonderful World of Color

This is actually the first podcast I listened to from start to finish. I especially liked the end of the podcast. Also, it’s not a murder mystery, the bastard Smerdyakov did it (I figure if we’re spoiling Oedipus we can spoil Karamazov).

@Kylie Good thinking! I knew I needed to include more links, but couldn’t think what they were. I’ve updated the post now.
@Alex I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Is there an RSS feed for the podcast?

When will this be on iTunes? I never listen to podcasts except on my iPhone and getting them on there automatically is awesome. I’m stoked to check it out, I’d just love it if future episodes were available without any effort (from me) =)

I was revamping my podcast feed from earlier, only to discover that it’s having some problems. I’m not sure if the issue is related to the WP upgrades since I last ‘casted, or the recent move of Feedburner. Regardless, as soon as I get it sorted, I’ll have both RSS and iTunes links available.

Congratulations to you Corvus. I think you did a great job of salvaging so much meaning from the choppy conversation. The podcast was very exciting, I hope we will have an opportunity to do that again!
I wrote an article on some of the things that haven’t quite made it into the BORTcast. So for everybody who is interested to dive deeper into the subject:

I can take very little credit for the end result of our round table. It was easy to salvage meaning when I had such eloquent guests.
